Bipolar Medication Cocktails (With A Side of ECT)

I find it helpful to read what drugs are working for my fellow Bipolars. One of my most popular tags is “Best Bipolar Medications” so I know it’s something that other people are searching out too. I thought I’d give an update on what’s working for me, especially since I’ve come back from the very brink, in that I was very, very seriously suicidal at the end of January and I’ve managed to make my way back to the point that I actually have some hope for the future (amazing even to me).

When I was hospitalized in January, the psychiatrist and medical director at the hospital got out what he calls his “big guns” and put me on Clozaril 100 mg and unilateral ECT. Although this has been effective, I don’t recommend it unless you are profoundly desperate, as the Clozaril will cause weight gain due to marijuana-like munchies. In addition, I am on Topiramate 50 mg (to try and give me some impulse control over the munchies), Bupropion XL 450 mg for depression, and Clonazepam .5 mg for sleep. The Clonazepam is a recent addition, as my sleep was quite disturbed and my psychiatrist was worried that I would cycle back into depression. I took it for the first time last night and I was happily zonked.

So people, what’s working for you? Please share in the comments. Let’s help each other!

  1. Glad you’ve found a mix that works for you. I’m stable on divalproex sodium (Depakote) and escitalopram oxalate (lexapro). When needed, I take clonazepam (Klonopin) for sleep.

  2. I’ve been taking Citalopram and clonazepam for a long time. Mr. Shrink keeps insisting that I take resperidone but I refuse to. It does calm me down but it also takes away my personality not to mention the stiffness. I battle suicidal episodes weekly. May be not such a good plan.

  3. Before I came off (and hopefully it’ll work when I go back on next month after the baby is born!), I was taking 400mg of Seroquel a day, and 50mg of Zoloft. It seemed to be working quite well! I was resistant to adding an antidepressant ’cause I’m a rapid cycler and it can make it worse, but with the mood stabilizing effects of Seroquel in place, it seemed like it was able to do its job and clean up the lingering severe depression.

      • Lol, it’s been in the blog a bit, but as I’ve been in a lot more physical pain this time, I just sort of keep my head down and wait for the end. Soo glad that this kiddo is the last time I’m doing this, ha ha.

  4. I take Lamictal, Geodon, Lithium, Ritalin, Prazosin (for PTSD nightmares), clonazepam (PRN for anxiety), olanzapine ODT (for sleep), and am temporarily taking flurazepam which is a potent benzo that makes me sleep — trying to get me through a hypomanic episode. The dosages on these stay relatively the same — they’re pretty much maxed out. I did take Cymbalta in the past, but have found that, with any antidepressant I have tried, it causes severe mania. Hope this laundry list helps! 😀

  5. My MAOI Parnate and lithium and Seroquel have given me my life back. MAOI meds are suggested to those with med resistant bipolar depression. They are my miracle.
